The Bradford Council for Mosques was established in 1981 as an umbrella body for Masajid and Madaris throughout the Bradford district. These are independent voluntary organisations, managed by local neighbourhood communities. The role of the BCFM has been and continues to be advisory and with a policy of non-interference in the internal affairs of its member organisations, unless, they are specifically asked for advice and guidance.
Bradford CFM’s objectives are:
• the protection of the Islamic code of life
• to support Muslims to practice their without the fear of hate and malice.
• to encourage understanding, cooperation and mutual support between its members on common areas of concerns
• to facilitate information flow on religious matters particularly affecting policy and practice
• to foster links with other faith communities in order to encourage understanding and cooperation.
The organization’s work is guided by the following principles:
• respect the independence of member organisations to regulate their affairs.
• respect everyone’s right to live his or her faith without the fear of attack, harassment and discrimination
• accept and respect legitimacy of other organisations and networks representing other communities and interests
• accepting UK as a multi-faith, multicultural community. Recognising that from time to time there will be differences of views and approaches on issues and events and not letting those differences to divide us.
The above aims and work ethics have guided the work of the organisation throughout its period of existence.
The Bradford Council for Mosques was the first Muslim body of its kind and demonstrated the benefits of collaboration across different communities of Muslims. It inspired developments of similar structures in other UK towns and cities.
The Bradford Council for Mosques provided the initial inspiration and played an active role in the establishment of Muslim Council of Britain and has worked collaboratively with many of the prominent Islamic organisations across the country.
